Assert Yourself: 5 ways to clearer communication

Last week, I talked about the different communication styles humans (and their websites) use to share their messages with the world.

One of the most effective (and efficient!) ways small businesses can convey value to their clients and prospects is through assertive communication.

Today I want to give you 5 quick ways to level up your internal and external comms with a simple twist of words.

The “Thanks, But” Statement

The “but” conjunction tends to negate the statement that came before it. Balance it out by following with something helpful in your next sentence.

“Thanks for thinking of me, but I can’t make that a priority right now. Have you thought of… ?”

The “Thanks, And” Statement

By saying “and” you affirm the leading statement while opening up another opportunity down the pike

I appreciate your opinion, and I hope you offer it again next time.”

The “Cut The Crap” Statement

There’s nothing wrong with being absolutely and unapologetically firm on your stance, especially if you know there’s no wiggle room on your end. It’s a benefit (and sometimes a relief) to both parties when you can be clear about your point of view.

“I disagree with you. I see it like this.”

The Policy Statement

Here’s where having strong core values and a loud internal guidance system start to pay off. For this one to be effective, it helps to have clarity and consistency on your side. Self-awareness goes a long way here!

“It’s my policy to [enter a core belief here].”

The “No” Statement

The shortest one is sometimes the hardest—and the best—one to practice!

“No.”

Here’s your chance to add to the arsenal. What assertive phrases have you used that have helped you and the people you’re talking to get more done?
